Learning how to paint may seem a daunting task to some, and the challenge of finding where to buy quality paints, brushes, and other art supplies at a reasonable cost is yet another obstacle to overcome. There are numerous manufacturers, distributors, discount suppliers and other vendors of artists brushes, acrylic and oil paints, and other media such as gouache and watercolors. Artists brushes come in a variety of sizes and shapes - round, liner, script, shader, chisel, angular, wash, one stroke, filbert, fan, stippler, rake, mop, stencil and more. Loew-Cornell lists over two dozen brush shapes. Scharff Brushes lists brush hair choices including Kolinsky, red sable, squirrel, ox, goat, bristle, and synthetic among others. Those of you who attend painting classes at MorningGloryArt Studio can always feel free to seek my advice on acrylic and oil paints, brushes, and materials and supplies for decorative painting. You can also go 'exploring' on the WWW for online vendors and information from a variety of sources. The What's New - Art & Decorative Painting has an information page entitled 'External Web Sites' with links to a variety of decorative painting websites. The Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ ODP (Open Directory Project) are good places to start. Perhaps you will find project ideas or inspiration, perhaps useful painting tips or information. Other categories in these directories will lead to arts, crafts, and painting supplies. The Craft Site Directory also has an extensive list of decorative and tole painting websites in addition to arts & crafts websites in general - some are informational sites, others sell finished goods, and others are vendors of art materials. Michaels Arts and Crafts Store has an extensive website with much useful craft and decorative painting information in addition to artists brushes and paints. The ArtistsClub.com aka Artists Club is another good site dedicated to tole and decorative painting supplies. Dick Blick Art Materials has useful information on brush shapes, hairs, and sizes, and sells artists brushes in a variety of grades and price ranges, acrylic and oil paints, watercolors and gouache. Finally, an excellent source of general information about decorative painting is Artezan.com.
